In the rest part of East Asia such as Japan and Java, the practice was described by a Dutch surgeon, Jacob de Bondt on his travel in Asia. Though, in China the treatment of acupuncture was mostly practiced by the lower and illiterate class of people. Willem ten Rhijne, a Dutch physician who studied about the practice for two years in Japan was the first person to write about the first European text on acupuncture. Since the treatment was practiced mostly by the lower strata of people, the teaching and practice of acupuncture within the Imperial Academy of Medicine was banned in 1822 by an edict from the Chinese Emperor calling the practice unfit for gentlemen scholars. On the other hand, the treatment was praised and was practiced by many medical practitioners with a little more experiments.
